Synopsis:
In this enlightening presentation on Singapore’s judicial system, Dr Kevin Tan will delve into institutional practices and procedures that uphold a just and accountable judiciary. The first segment will explore various aspects that foster fairness and responsibility within the judicial framework. Moving on to the second part, Dr Tan will scrutinize the boundaries of critical discourse within the context of Singapore. This includes examining issues such as “scandalizing the judiciary” and defamation in political discourse. The talk will conclude with an interactive Q&A session.
About the Speaker:
Dr Kevin YL Tan is an accomplished legal and historical scholar. With over 30 years of experience, he has been actively involved in teaching constitutional and administrative law. His extensive contributions include the widely-used casebook “Constitutional Law in Malaysia and Singapore” (co-authored with Thio Li-ann). Dr Tan is a key figure in civil society, having held leadership positions in organisations such as The Roundtable, the Singapore Heritage Society, and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (Singapore). He currently serves as a Professor at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, NTU, and holds an Adjunct Professorship at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. His prolific bibliography encompasses more than 40 books on the law, history, and politics of Singapore.
